The Law of Success ~ Part 1

Today I read a posting on my Facebook page from a friend who is very discouraged.  He has been struggling to find a decent job for going on three years.  In this nasty economy, companies have the choice of anyone they want to fill positions at salaries which are below the national average scale.  Almost 10% of Americans are currently out of work!  So how the heck does anyone stay on their game, up in their attitude and not quit on their personal dreams while daily experiencing the stress of paying their mortgage and feeding their family?

The portion of the following written piece has been taken from Tony Robbins, ‘Law of Success Part 1.”  I encourage you to slowly read this offering a number of times.  In a global financial crunch that so many of us are facing, this is not a reason or excuse to quit on our dreams, our desires, hopes and God inspired dreams.

Keep your image, stay in an attitude of gratitude and move forward.

“A young boy was once facing a Thanksgiving without much to eat. He and his family were too proud to go to the local charity. Yet, early that afternoon, there was a knock on the door and he opened it to a tall man with a large basket of Thanksgiving feast, turkey, vegetables, pies and all manner of sweets and fixings. That day that young man determined to have enough resources in his future to be able to gift many people as his family had been gifted that day.

When he was 18, he had been working and he bought one complete meal for a 2 local families who had nothing. As he gave the food to the first family, playing the part of delivery man, the woman thanked him with such gratitude that he cried as he left. He continued this practice each year and his personal charity grew. He invited friends to join and they helped purchase the food and deliver the food.

Anthony Robbins suggests that we decide what’s important to us, and “then take MASSIVE ACTION each day to make it better, even when it doesn’t look as if it’s working.” He calls this Personal Power. With personal power, he explains, we don’t give up and we learn from our mistakes.

Colonel Sanders had two years of “nos” before he heard his first “yes.” He was refused 1009 times. Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got the financing to build Disney World.

The thing that all successful people have in common is that they focus on what they want, not on what they don’t have. They are grateful for what they have.

When down, we have to accept where we are, but also accept that where we are is not where we will be. We have to discard any “learned helplessness”! We can’t give in to discouragement or the pain of past failures. Colonel Sanders did not give in even after two years of straight “nos”!

Thomas Edison once said, “I’m not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.”

Along these lines Tony Robbins promises us, “Your past does not equal your future. No problem is permanent. No problem affects my entire life. This too shall pass if I continue to take massive, positive, constructive action.” He then went from living hand to mouth to more than a million dollar net worth in less than one year.

This is something we all can learn, but we have to start here. Our future is not our past. Massive Action will move  us from where we are.”

“Don’t quit, don’t ever quit.”  Jim Valvano

  1. You know Ed, I was unemployed six months and was fortunate to find a job as a table games dealer at one of the new casinos that opened. It was great at the start, but now I am down to one day a week. The last day I worked, I was sent home after 45 minutes. I am starting to think I am supposed to do my own thing. There is so much opportunity out there and everyone gets locked into thinking a job is the only answer. Maybe it’s the universe’s way of telling your friend he isn’t supposed to have a job. I just finished “Think and Grow Rich” for the second time. I read it many years ago. I would recommend your friend read this immediately. Your friend needs to, first of all, be grateful for the extra time he has. I was angry about all of the free time at first, then realized what a blessing it is. Time to read, time to meditate, time to workout, etc. We seem get too much of our value from a job. It may not be a bad idea to do some volunteer work as well. It will give your friend something to do that’s positive, even if there is no pay for it. I am sure things will work out the way they are supposed to. Tell your friend to keep the faith.

  2. Ed,

In my mid 20′s, I was a Counselor for the Salvation Army in one of their Adult Rehabilitation Centers. I learned so much from the men I counseled and the organizations that help support them at that location.

Life must be lived one day at a time, especially when things are tough. Sometime, we need to live one hour at a time. There’s a Fleetwood Mac song that I’m sure we’ve probably all heard call, “Don’t Stop Thinkin’ About Tomorrow” that says:

If you wake up and don’t want to smile,
If it takes just a little while,
Open your eyes and look at the day,
You’ll see things in a different way.

    Don’t stop, thinking about tomorrow,
Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here,
    It’ll be, better than before,
    Yesterdays gone, yesterdays gone.

I think that this song is talking about believing in a new day with new possibilities and letting go of the past. Expectation of something good is the power of attraction. The Bible calls it hope, faith and belief. Your friend can make it one hour at a time… Hoping, believing and expecting that something good is coming.

Here’s a link to that Fleetwood Mac song:

My prayers are with your friend!

    Sincerely,
    Gary Conner
